About the Workshop

The Annual Workshop on Recent Developments in Electronic Structure Methods brings together active participants in electronic structure theory from universities, colleges, institutes, and laboratories around the world.

This workshop was started by David M. Ceperley and Richard M. Martin (Physics, University of Illinois) in 1989. Since 2015, this workshop has been led by Andrew M. Rappe (Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania). The Electronic Structure Workshop has been hosted by more than 20 universities and institutions (https://mcc.illinois.edu/workshops/electronicstructure/).

The invited presentations and contributed posters describe new methods for computing previously inaccessible properties, breakthroughs in computational efficiency and accuracy, and novel applications of these approaches to the study of molecules, liquids, and solids. This conference represents a valuable opportunity for students, postdocs, and senior researchers alike to explain their ideas and learn from each other.

For many years, the workshop was funded by both local organizations and the National Science Foundation’s “Materials World Network: The Materials Computation Center Outreach Effort” Award #1107472.  

2027 Annual Workshop on Recent Developments in Electronic Structure Methods will be held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from June 15 (Tu) - 17 (Thr), 2027, with hands-on tutorials scheduled on June 14 (Monday) afternoon.
